# Back Button Widget Issues with Custom or Block Themes

On some block-based or heavily customized themes, and inside certain page builders, the button from [Back Button Anywhere Widget for WordPress](https://wpfactory.com/item/back-button-widget-wordpress-plugin/) may not display or may behave oddly. This is usually about where and how the theme lets the button render.

### Common symptoms

- The button does not display at all.
- The button appears but the layout is broken or it is not clickable.
- A floating button (Pro) appears in an unexpected place or off screen.
- A shortcode inside a builder module shows as raw text.

### Typical causes

- The theme or builder does not use traditional widget areas, or filters content in a way that blocks the button.
- A custom template omits `wp_head()` or `wp_footer()`, so the floating button's inline styles never load.
- A builder module sanitizes or wraps the shortcode output.

### Step-by-step fix

1. **Use a supported placement:** if the theme lacks widget areas, put `[alg_back_button label="Go Back"]` directly in page or post content, in a block or module that allows shortcodes. Avoid modules that restrict HTML.
2. **Check the theme's hooks:** confirm the theme's header calls `<?php wp_head(); ?>` and the footer calls `<?php wp_footer(); ?>`. The floating button (Pro) is printed on `wp_footer()`, so without it the floating button cannot appear.
3. **Test with a default theme:** switch to a stock theme (such as Twenty Twenty-Four) and test the widget or shortcode. If it works there, the issue is in your theme or builder.
4. **Position a floating button:** if a floating button (Pro) sits off screen, adjust its position and margins in Floating Button Options, or add a small CSS override on the `alg_back_button_floating` class.
5. **Contact the theme or builder author:** if the button still fails on default settings, ask them to confirm standard widget and shortcode hooks are supported.

### Prevention

Prefer themes that follow WordPress standards and include the standard template hooks. When you plan a build, note which plugins (like Back Button Widget) rely on `wp_head()` and `wp_footer()` so those hooks are never removed.
