Does Slugs Manager Handle Taxonomy Slugs?

Problem Description #

You’re unsure whether the plugin deletes old category or taxonomy slugs or only post slugs. Reports show users asking about category slug removal and whether taxonomy old slugs are included.

Common symptoms:

  • You expected category/tag old slugs to appear in the list but they don’t.

  • Concern that removing taxonomy slugs might break term URLs or cause 404s.

Cause:
Some implementations of old-slug storage differ between post type and taxonomy systems. The plugin may focus primarily on post permalink history (post slugs) and may or may not include taxonomy entries depending on version and settings.

Solution – step-by-step #

  1. Check plugin docs for explicit taxonomy support

    1. Open the plugin docs (WPFactory) and search for “taxonomies” or “categories.” The docs clarify which entities the plugin scans. If taxonomies are excluded, you’ll need to handle them separately. WPFactory

  2. Inspect the Old Slugs page for taxonomy entries

    1. On Tools → Old Slugs look for columns that indicate post type. If taxonomy old slugs appear, they’ll show with term or similar; otherwise they’re likely not included.

  3. Backup then test a single taxonomy slug removal on staging

    1. Create a staging test where you have a term with an old slug, then run a single removal and check frontend behavior.

  4. If taxonomies aren’t supported, remove them manually (careful)

    1. For taxonomies, WP stores slugs primarily on the term row. If you need to remove old term slugs, consult taxonomy/DB guides or WP-CLI term commands. Only do manual DB edits with full backups.

  5. Ask support for taxonomy feature or enhancement

    1. If taxonomy support would be useful, open a feature request with example use-cases; the plugin author may add it.

Prerequisites #

  • Admin access and staging environment.

  • Knowledge of taxonomy term storage if manual steps are required.

Additional Notes / Prevention #

Avoid bulk deletion of taxonomy slugs on production without testing—term URL changes can impact site navigation and SEO.
