What Slugs Manager Does (Scope and Limits)

What Slugs Manager does, and what it does not #

Slugs Manager: Delete Old Permalinks from WordPress Database is a focused clean-up tool. Its job is to find and remove old slugs (permalinks) left behind when you change a post’s title or URL. Knowing its scope up front avoids confusion. Everything lives on one page under WPFactory > Slugs Manager.

What it does #

  • Scans for old post slugs: lists every _wp_old_slug record in the database, with the old slug, post ID, post title, post type, and current slug.
  • Removes old slugs: delete a single entry, a selection, or all of them.
  • Regenerates slugs from titles (Pro): rebuilds the current slug from the post title for the post types you choose.
  • Automates clean ups (Pro): scheduled clean ups on an interval, or clean up whenever a post is saved.
  • Flushes rewrite rules: a free Extra Tool that removes and recreates WordPress rewrite rules.

What it does not do #

  • It is not a live slug editor. To change a current post slug, edit the post’s permalink in the editor.
  • It is not a redirect manager. It does not create or store 301 redirects. Removing an old slug actually removes the WordPress redirect that old slug provided.
  • It does not manage taxonomy (category or tag) old slugs. It only handles post-level _wp_old_slug records.

A safe workflow #

Because clearing old slugs removes the matching WordPress redirects, pair Slugs Manager with a redirect strategy. First set up 301 redirects for any prior URLs that still receive traffic using a dedicated redirect tool, then use Slugs Manager to prune the leftover old slugs you no longer need. Always back up your database before a bulk operation.
