Rename Media Files Slows Down Admin / Triggers Slow Queries

Table of Contents

On sites with large media libraries, the WordPress admin could feel slow with the plugin active. This was addressed in a plugin update, so the fix is usually just to update Rename Media Files: Improve Your WordPress SEO.

Symptom #

  • The Media Library loads slowly, or the Add Media modal is delayed.
  • Query Monitor or a similar debugging tool reports a slow query associated with the plugin.

Cause #

An earlier version ran a query that collected attachment dates (grouped by year and month) to populate the media library date filter. On large libraries this query could be heavy. It was fixed in version 1.4.0 (changelog entry dated 2024-08-07, “Fixed slow query on admin pages”).

Fix steps #

  1. Update Rename Media Files to the latest version, which includes the slow-query fix.
  2. Clear your caches (object cache, opcode cache, and any page cache) and re-test admin performance.
  3. If you are renaming a large number of files at once, split the work into smaller batches rather than running one very large bulk operation.

For very large libraries, back up your site before any large-scale operation and process media in small batches.
