“Add to Wishlist” Also Triggers “Add to Cart”

If clicking “Add to Wishlist” in Wishlist for WooCommerce also adds the product to the cart, the wishlist button is sitting inside an element that the theme or another plugin treats as an add-to-cart trigger. Move the button with the Buttons tab settings under WPFactory > Wishlist, then find the conflicting theme or plugin.

Problem description #

When a customer clicks “Add to Wishlist”, the item is added to their wishlist and also, unexpectedly, to the cart.

Common symptoms #

  • After “Add to Wishlist”, the product appears both in the wishlist and in the cart.
  • The issue disappears when switching to a default theme or disabling other plugins, which indicates a conflict.

Cause #

The wishlist reacts to the press on its button (by default the mouseup and touchend events) and does not stop the click from continuing to the elements around it. If a theme wraps the product card or the add-to-cart area in its own click handler, or another plugin binds “Add to Cart” to the same area, that handler also runs and both actions fire.

Solution (step by step) #

  1. Test with a default theme and minimal plugins: switch to a default theme and deactivate all plugins except WooCommerce and the wishlist, then retry. If it works correctly, a conflict is confirmed.
  2. Identify the conflicting plugin or theme: re-enable plugins one by one (or switch the theme back), testing after each.
  3. Move the wishlist button away from the add-to-cart area: go to WPFactory > Wishlist (also reachable at WooCommerce > Settings > Wishlist) > Buttons. On shop pages, change Default button – Loop > Hook priority between 9 – Before add to cart button and 11 – After add to cart button, or use the thumb button over the image instead of the text button. On product pages, pick a different Hook, for example After add to cart form.
  4. Check optimization plugins: combined or minified scripts can change the order in which click handlers run. Exclude the wishlist scripts from minification and clear the cache.
  5. Contact the other developer: if a theme or plugin is confirmed, ask its support to keep its “Add to Cart” handler off the wishlist button.

Prerequisites #

  • Admin access, and the ability to switch themes, disable plugins and test changes one at a time.

Additional notes #

  • The events that trigger the wishlist are set in Advanced > Javascript toggle events (defaults mouseup, touchend). Keep them at the defaults unless support advises otherwise.
  • Document any customizations so future updates do not reintroduce the conflict, and retest after updating themes or plugins that change product loops or buttons.

FAQ #

Is this a bug in the wishlist plugin? #

Usually not. In a default theme the two buttons act independently; the double action comes from another script reacting to the same click.

Which button type is least likely to conflict? #

The thumb button, because it sits over the product image rather than next to the add-to-cart button.

Can I place the button myself? #

Yes, with Pro: [alg_wc_wl_toggle_item_btn] or Custom Hook put it exactly where you want.
